Who Participated?

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was a milestone event for the international community, bringing together world leaders to consider a range of environmental, social and economic issues in the context of a new century and a new millennium. The Summit was the culmination of over thirty years of increased global interdependence and environmental awareness.

Broad participation and inclusiveness were central principles of the Summit. This is because all sectors have a role to play in building a future in which global resources are protected, and prosperity and health are within reach for all the world's citizens.

In addition to governments, there was active participation by representatives from civil society, children and youth, business and industry, indigenous people, and local authorities.
