Next Steps

The WSSD focused on specific aspects of implementation and integration - bringing various stakeholders together to take concrete action on sustainable development. The Summit yielded three key outcomes:
  1. A Political Declaration affirming the central importance of sustainable development to the world community.
  2. A Plan of Implementation outlining actions to be taken in specific areas of sustainable development.
  3. The Political Declaration and the Plan of Implementation are found within the United Nations Report of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

  4. A variety of Implementation Partnerships forged among governments, intergovernmental bodies, civil society organizations and the private sector to further the implementation of sustainable development.

Canada was an active participant at the WSSD and will continue to work closely with all partners to build on these outcomes of the Summit.

Plan of Implementation

As a first step, the Government of Canada is now assessing how Canada should move forward on the recommendations identified in the Implementation Plan. We are determining which federal departments will play a role in implementing specific commitments.

The Government of Canada met with stakeholders to de-brief following the Summit, and welcomes views from all sectors of society on the implementation of WSSD commitments. Stakeholders are invited to contact the Earth Summit 2002 Canadian Secretariat to provide feedback.

The Government of Canada will produce a report detailing specific actions that should be taken to support the Plan of Implementation.

Implementation Partnerships

In addition to acting on the Plan of Implementation, Canada is a key participant in various Partnerships agreed to at the Summit. These action-oriented Partnerships are voluntary initiatives that include a wide-range of partners such as the private sector, governments, intergovernmental bodies, civil society organizations and the private sector.

A summary of Partnerships with Canadian involvement is available.
