Canada understands that sustainable development means ensuring that environmental, economic and social activities and policies are mutually reinforcing. This approach aims to bring about a higher quality of life and provide better access to the necessities of life for present and future generations.

The WSSD provided an opportunity to re-energize global action on sustainable development, integrating solutions to critical environmental, economic and social development factors.

Canada promoted a focus on practical action to build the capacity to implement existing commitments, rather than launching negotiations on new agreements. Canada believes that this practical action can only be achieved through cooperation at many levels.

Given the extensive number of sustainable development issues that were dealt with at the Summit, Canada focused its efforts on where we can contribute most effectively:
