What is Sustainable Development?

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Our Common Future: Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (The Brundtland Report), 1987

Sustainable development is ultimately about improving quality of life for more of the world's people in a way that maintains the capacity of the planet over the long term.

Sustainable development recognizes that development - essential to satisfying human needs and improving quality of life - must be based on the efficient and environmentally responsible use of natural, human, and economic resources.

Building a truly sustainable way of life requires integrated action in three general areas, known as the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainable development:

Economic Development - Today's interlinked, global economic systems require an integrated approach that fosters responsible long-term development that ensures no nation or community is left behind. Economic development also provides the necessary wealth to invest in protecting the environment, education, science and technology, and in maintaining health and well-being.

Conserving Natural Resources and the Environment - Human security, prosperity and well-being depend on a healthy and abundant environment. Sustainable development of natural resources, pollution prevention, and conservation of natural habitats are central to advancing poverty alleviation and improved quality of life.

Social Development - The basic needs of the world's people for jobs, food, education, energy, health care, water and sanitation must be addressed while respecting cultural and social diversity, and the rights of workers. Development must be undertaken in a manner that empowers all members of society to play a role in determining their futures.
